Speaking Imperfect English Is Better Than Staying Silent

Nobody is judging you, so be confident in your self and your ability!

Can confidence make your English better, even if you haven’t learned any new English?

I think yes, it can.

Confidence can create something like a placebo effect. Your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation may not have changed, but you become more willing to speak. Once you start speaking, you become a more effective communicator.

That may sound too simple, but consider the alternative.

Most People Are Not Grading Your English

Imagine you are in a meeting and someone asks for your opinion.

You have a useful answer, but you are worried about making a grammar mistake. You spend too much time thinking about the correct sentence. The discussion moves on and you say nothing.

Now imagine that you give your opinion using imperfect English. You make a few mistakes, but everyone understands your point.

The second way is obviously much better.

Most people you speak with at work are not analyzing your grammar. They are trying to understand your message. They want the information you have, the answer to their question or your opinion about what the company should do next.

If they understand you, the communication has worked.

Confidence Changes How People Use Their English

Two people may have roughly the same English ability.

One is worried about making mistakes and avoids speaking. The other accepts that their English isn’t perfect and joins the conversation anyway.

The second person will often appear to have better English. But the main difference may simply be that we can hear them using it.

Their confidence also creates more opportunities to improve. They speak more often, see which words work, notice where communication breaks down and become more comfortable dealing with other English speakers.

This creates a useful cycle:

Confidence leads to speaking. Speaking leads to experience. Experience leads to more confidence.

The person who stays silent gets none of those benefits.

Speaking Imperfect English Is Not the Final Goal

Of course, encouragement and confidence boosting cannot replace English development.

Telling someone, “Don’t worry–just speak!” is not enough. Professionals still need useful vocabulary, clear pronunciation, and practice handling situations they face at work.

But training should do both. It should improve their English while making them more willing to use the English they already have.

That is why realistic speaking practice is central to our English Plus approach. Participants practise meetings, presentations, customer conversations and other workplace situations. They learn what to say, practise saying it and discover that they can make themselves understood.

Sometimes improved English creates confidence.

Sometimes confidence comes first and allows someone to start using their English.

Either way, speaking imperfect English and getting your message across is better than keeping perfect English inside your head.
