Questions for HR Departments

As an American who has worked in management positions in Thailand, and also taught hundreds of Thai professionals how to speak Business English in Bangkok for many years, I can guess that for about 75% of you, the answers to the questions above are probably YES, MAYBE, NO and YES, MAYBE, NO.

But please don’t take my word for it. This study by Thai academics seems to agree, and it includes reference to Foreign Languages in Workplaces: A Reflection from Human Resource Officers, HRD Journal Burapha University.
The conclusions are discussed in Chapter 5 of the study. Here are some key points:
“…Employees who possess English communication skills would have higher opportunities in completing the tasks in contact with foreigners… Furthermore, the multinational company usually has a foreigner in the management team. This implies that Thai employees who have higher English communication skills would have higher opportunities for being promoted in their career path…”
“From Thai employees’ point of view, English communication becomes more and more necessary as they advance through their career path.”
“It was found that from the management point of view, English communication skills were inadequate, particularly listening and speaking skills.”
