Employee English Training Must Include Two Things

VOCABULARY & SPEAKING PRACTICE
Employee English training makes Thai professionals feel a sense of accomplishment.
That’s because it’s a lot like other types of on-the-job training that they receive. It can help them grow in their company and career, and it signals that their employer cares about their growth.
The two most important things for HR & Training Managers to consider when choosing an English training program for employees are the following:
  1. Training should focus on Business English vocabulary.
  2. Training should focus on “practice & production” activities.
Does your company’s English training program accomplish these things? When your employees study English, do they actually expand their vocabularies and speak more and better English?

This article will look at how to accomplish those two key things in your employee English training program. And in 2024, Thai companies really should have an ongoing English training program in place.

The Importance of Learning Vocabulary

As we stated above, training should focus on Business English vocabulary.
Any Thai professional who has learned English knows that it is more important to know English words & phrases than to understand rules & regulations.

Good corporate English training values Vocabulary Over Grammar.

Your employees should study the Present Perfect Continuous if you want them to pass grammar tests. But, if you want them to speak & write English more professionally and be confident doing so, they should study Business English vocabulary.
It is vocabulary that will allow them to ask & answer questions, share opinions, provide feedback, and write emails that recipients can understand quickly.
But there is a wrong way and a right way to study English vocabulary. The wrong way is to memorize lists of words from a business textbook or worksheets. The right way is to study multi-words chunks of vocabulary that are “fit for purpose.”

In English training, “fit for purpose” simply means that the words & phrases an employee learns accomplishes a certain purpose. For example, Human Resources teams would learn department-specific terminology and communication skills so they can represent their profession as confidently in English as they do in Thai.

Vocabulary is key for an HR person to sound like an HR person, right?

The Importance of Practicing Speaking

As we also mentioned above, employee English training should focus on “practice & production” activities.
And when we say “employee English training” we need to be careful not to assume all employees are the same.
Some of your employees might be high in grammar knowledge, but have relatively small vocabularies. Others might have large vocabularies, but relatively poor pronunciation.
Some of your employees might be “visual learners,” meaning they learn & remember information best when it’s presented in clear charts, tables, and graphics. Other employees may be “kinesthetic learners,” which means they learn best through physical activities involving movement and performing hands-on tasks.
Some might be introverts, others extroverts, and so on. Employees who study English have different abilities, preferences, and learning styles.
Q: Do you know what unites them in almost any corporate English training environment?
A: Tasks & activities that allow them to practice speaking English freely and with feedback.
After all, the intended outcome of almost every employee English training program is for participants to become better speakers, chai mai?
And since most companies don’t have the time or budget to arrange 1-on-1 training for all of their employees, it is usually done in groups.
ECSC Thailand makes sure that diverse groups of employees upgrade their English speaking ability.
